Ever heard of Tillamook cheese? They sell it at Central Market in Texas, but its based in the Tillamook Valleys of Oregon where are beautiful vineyards on the mountainous coastlines. We were so excited to visit the factory, since I am also “factory” engineer and all
I haven’t walked onto a production floor in over 5 years, but it brings back memories. Industrial/Manufacturing engineers make things go faster, cheaper, and keep the quality by basically adding in machines and reducing human error.
But in that respect, I feel that we have dumb down the human civilization
in a way. I see the lady who basically stands and pushes a button and moves cheese for 12 hours a day. How must she feel about the quality of her job? Her life? People are proud of a job, and a career, they have input in and are valued parts of society.
So I was expecting a small factory where some of the process was still handmade. Nope. Really large production facility, with commercialize business. They still make great cheese and their ICE CREAM is to die for. Try the Mountain Wild Berry or Cherry. They put in large chunks of cherries, I mean fresh cherries in every bite. And it was only $2 for this huge cone!
Oh, but the Brie! The Nessa got me started on Brie after a long break, but man,
I am crazy about Brie. She gave me a great recipe where you wrap croissant from a roll or pie crust around the brie and bake 350 for 10-20 minutes until golden. I have found that slicing off the wax, making puncture holes and pressing down brown sugar, and adding some honey and pine nuts makes this uber gourmet. You can tell, I have done this a lot
It is my daily chocolate. On an apple or pear with some Nutella, HEAVEN. Further down about a mile, there is small dairy farm called the Blue Heron. Such a cute place, and they have a farm on the cheese factory grounds! The variety of cheese and wine is mind-boggling. We got some fresh French bread, Brie, and fresh caramel for the ride home.
